Internship Description: Summer law clerks have the opportunity to conduct legal research, draft memos and pleadings, and make appearances before public agencies. Description: The Environmental Enforcement Section (EES) is the largest litigating section of the Department of Justice. With 155 attorneys, EES has responsibility for representing the United States in federal civil enforcement of all major environmental statutes including, CERCLA, RCRA, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. While the EPA is the section's primary client agency the office also handles work on behalf of NOAA, the Departments of Interior and Agriculture and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Internship/Seasonal Positions: With a diverse work load and the demand of
over 1000 active federal cases, EES is continually looking for talented,
dedicated law students with an interest in gaining practical experience in
environmental law and complex civil litigation. Law clerks are called on to
perform legal research on environmental law issues as well as issues of federal
practice and procedure, corporate structure and liability and bankruptcy. Law
clerks typically draft complaints, settlement documents, legal memoranda, briefs
and written discovery, and work directly with Justice trial attorneys in active
federal cases or cases being prepared for filing.
Approximate Number of Positions: Eight-twelve positions in the Fall and Spring; sixteen-eighteen positions in the Summer.
Preferred Background: Excellent academic grades, strong research and writing skills and legal courses in evidence, civil procedure, administrative law, and environmental law.

Internship Description: SELC hires law clerks during the summer to assist in its projects. Clerks can expect to do resarch and writing for issues in litigation or for other advocacy in a substantive area. Research may include federal and state environmental statutes and regulations and procedural and evidentiary issues. Students also receive exposure to meetings on environmental policy with officials and representatives of environmental groups.
