XI. International Positions on the Net

While using the Internet to identify international opportunities may be a step above going to the country of choice and beginning the jobsearch, it is unfortunately not much better. There are a variety of reasons for this. First, the Internet is very much an English dominated medium and English versions of foreign sites are rare. Secondly, because each jurisdiction regulates what a foreign lawyer can do you are, necessarily, looking for "non-traditional" sites. Specific positions are often phrased in terms of consultants or advisors on American law or trade. Finally, the Net has not expanded as much beyond the technical areas outside of North America. However, there are some good English language resources which are available. Here are some of our favorites:

Generic Resources

1. The International Job Search Page: This is a great page which claims links to over 600 pages listing jobs world wide. The page provides links to resources on both a country and industry specific basis. While few are directly legal in nature a number are law related.

2. Peoplebank: Based in the United Kingdom this database lists positions world wide. There are a large number of positions listed but registration is required. Most law related positions are with consulting firms in Europe and the Middle East.

3. Thunderbird Site: Sponsored by Thunderbird University's International Business Program, Although somewhat difficult to find, this site provides a number of links to international jobs data bases in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

4. The Riley Guide International Job Search Page: The Riley Guide is known as one of the foremost resources on employment information on the Internet. This page provides a large number of links to pages listing positions overseas.

5. Attorney Find:
A great resource permitting you to identify attorneys throughout the world.

6. Foreign Counsel: The newest legal site for folks interested in international law. It has links to lots of international resources and promises international legal positions in the next few months.

7. Overseas Jobs: While there a limited number of legal positions listed on this generic site (mostly with U.S. AID) with are a good number of law related positions listed.

9. Job Sites: A pretty good site for folks interested in international business. Limited number of strictly legal positions, mostly in banking.

10. Euro-Graduate: A good data base of European positions for graduates and graduate students. A recent search turned up a number of British law firms recruiting law graduates.

11. International Jobs: A good generic international job site. To see them all you have to be a member. But a good idea to browse those available for free.

International Organizations: There are a number of pages providing links to international governments, relief agencies, NGO's and international organizations. Job seekers should be aware that they will be competing with foreign nationals and language skills will be required. The following pages provide these resources on a non-country specific basis:

1. One World Jobs: A very good page for identifying specific positions with overseas environmental, economic development and relief organizations. In addition to listing positions, the "partners" page provides links to organizations world wide.

1. Career Australia: Also from the folks at Career Mosaic, this site lists a
variety of positions down under. Some although not many are legal in nature.

2. Department of Employment Education and Training: Our favorite Australian site, this is the home of their employment security office. While your browser must be frame capable, it allows you to search all jobs listed with them. A few searches picked up both legal and law related positions.
